A band from the United States, Smashing Pumpkins was one of the most prominent and influential alternative rock bands of the 1990s. Smashing Pumpkins, a progressive rock band formed in Chicago in 1988 by guitarist and songwriter Billy Corgan (born March 17, 1967, Elk Grove, Illinois, United States), created a postpunk Cocteau Twins and the Cocteau Twins were two of several “dream-pop” acts that featured a combination of progressive rock, gothic atmosphere, and psychedelic.

Additionally, guitarist James Iha (full name James Yoshinobu Iha; born March 26, 1968, Chicago), bassist D’Arcy (real name D’Arcy Elizabeth Wretzky; born May 1, 1968, South Haven, Michigan), and drummer Jimmy Chamberlin were among the band’s initial members (in full James Joseph Chamberlin; b. June 10, 1964, Joliet, Illinois).

The group’s initial song, “I Am One,” was a commercial triumph, but the band’s debut album, Gish (1991), with its stadium-ready choruses, multitracked guitars, and high melodrama, was the record that helped reshape the rock landscape of the 1990s. In 1993, with the release of their second studio album, the multiplatinum Siamese Dream, which included the singles “Cherub Rock,” “Today,” and “Disarm,” the Smashing Pumpkins grew even more in popularity.

Its follow-up, Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness (1995), debuted at number one on the Billboard album chart and went on to sell more than four million copies in the United States while earning six Grammy Award nominations, including one for best hard rock performance for the track “Bullet with Butterfly Wings.” Likewise, they became recognized for the song “The End Is the Beginning Is the End,” which was used on the soundtrack for the film Batman & Robin (1997).

After reaching the pinnacle of their notoriety, the Smashing Pumpkins’ touring keyboardist, Jonathan Melvoin, died as a result of a heroin overdose while on tour. Following then, the situation deteriorated as the band went through a series of lineup changes.

Adore (1998) had mixed reviews and performed badly on the sales charts, and MACHINA/The Machines of God (2000) seemed as though Corgan was going it alone, which he eventually became by December 2000, when the group disbanded. After the album’s conclusion, Machina II/The Friends & Enemies of Modern Music (2000) was released exclusively to a small number of fans who, with Corgan’s assistance, made it accessible for download for free on the Internet.

As part of the Smashing Pumpkins’ re-union, Corgan and Chamberlin, who had previously worked together in another band, Zwan, stated that the band would be re-forming in 2005; nevertheless, they were the only original members that appeared on the band’s following album, Zeitgeist (2007). The next year, after Chamberlin’s departure from the band, Corgan started to put together a new Smashing Pumpkins lineup for Teargarden by Kaleidyscope, a thematically cohesive collection of songs that would be published one song at a time online before being combined into physical releases.

The project’s current iteration of the band released three EPs (2010–11) before releasing two related full-length albums, Oceania (2012) and Monuments to an Elegy (2013), which are both available on iTunes (2014). Shiny and Oh So Bright, Vol. 1: No Past. No Future was recorded by the Smashing Pumpkins when they were on tour in 2018. Chamberlin and Iha returned to the band for a tour that started in 2018. There was no sun in 2018 and Cyr (2020).
