A British rock band known for its blend of heavy metal, glam rock, and camp theatrics, Queen rose to prominence in the 1970s as one of the most popular acts of the era. Queen created a complex combination of layered guitar work by virtuoso Brian May and overdubbed vocal harmonies that were enlivened by the flamboyant performance of frontman and key songwriter Freddie Mercury, despite the fact that it was usually derided by reviewers.
The band’s members were Freddie Mercury (born September 5, 1946, Stone Town, Zanzibar—died November 24, 1991, Kensington, London, England), Brian May (born July 19, 1947, Twickenham, Middlesex, England), John Deacon (born August 19, 1951, Leicester, Leicestershire, England), and Roger Taylor (born July 26, 1949, King’s Lynn, Norfolk, England).
Queen became one of the most popular bands in the world in the mid-’70s thanks to Freddie Mercury’s legendary theatrical performances, topping the charts in England and regularly cracking the Billboard 200 Top Ten with albums such as 1975’s A Night at the Opera, 1976’s A Day at the Races, and 1977’s News of the World.
Moreover, they altered musical gears at whim, plunging into the worlds of funk and disco; a feature that helped turn songs like 1980’s bass-driven “Another One Bites the Dust” into international classics. The band maintained a devoted fanbase throughout the 1980s, scoring three number one albums in the United Kingdom with The Game (1980), A Kind of Magic (1986), and The Miracle (1989).
Along the way, they gained even more popular recognition by providing soundtracks to sci-fi action pictures such as Flash Gordon and The Highlander, which they enthusiastically supported. Though Mercury’s death in 1991 from complications related to AIDS brought Queen’s initial reign to an end (his final album was the posthumously released Made in Heaven), their influence could be heard in the work of subsequent generations of artists and bands, from Metallica and Smashing Pumpkins to George Michael, Prince, and Lady Gaga, to name a few.
Following Mercury’s death, Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” was included heavily in the successful comedy film Wayne’s World, and the song returned to the top of the charts a year later. Eventually, Queen made a comeback to the stage, performing with Bad Company vocalist Paul Rodgers in the 2000s and subsequently with former American Idol runner-up Adam Lambert starting in 2011.
After a long hiatus, the Queen name was brought back in 2005, but this time with the prefix “+ Paul Rodgers.” Rodgers, the former lead singer of Free and Bad Company, reunited with Brian May and Roger Taylor (John Deacon remained out of the band) for a number of live performances, one of which was captured on the Hollywood label’s 2005 release Return of the Champions, a double-disc set that was released in 2005.
International touring and the release of a new studio record, which included Rodgers’ vocals, continued. The Cosmos Rocks were released in the United Kingdom in September 2008 under the label “Queen + Paul Rodgers,” with an American release following a month after that. The response to the film was very divided. After Rodgers left Queen in 2009, a new collection titled Absolute Greatest was released to commemorate his legacy.
Several television appearances followed over the next two years, including a performance on the 2009 American Idol finale, in which they collaborated with Adam Lambert, and in 2010, Queen was forced to part ways with their former label, EMI, in order to join Island, which transferred all of the group’s recordings to Universal.
It was followed by another round of reissues in 2011, as well as a performance with Lambert at the MTV Europe Music Awards. Lambert quickly established himself as a fixture with Queen, who performed several major concerts and television appearances in 2012 and 2013, before embarking on their first-ever full world tour in 2014. Another collection, Queen Forever, was published in the same year as the previous one.
It was anchored by revamped versions of three classic songs, including a solo number by Mercury in which he duetted with Michael Jackson, as well as a new song by Mercury. 2015 saw the release of the band’s archive live CD, A Night at the Odeon, which included a performance from their 1975 Christmas Eve show at London’s Hammersmith Odeon.
Over the following two years, the band remained active, performing live with Lambert on many occasions. Rami Malek played Queen frontman, Freddie Mercury, in the biographical film Bohemian Rhapsody, which premiered in theatres on February 16, 2018. As part of the film’s soundtrack, the band contributed to a collection of iconic classics as well as live recordings and some songs redone for the project. Live Around the World, a concert compilation starring Lambert is scheduled to be released in October 2020.
