Rock band Mötley Crüe was one of the most prominent and successful of the 1980s hair metal scene with platinum-selling albums and several hit singles. A hard-partying reputation and an ability to combine pop songs with heavy metal antics propelled the band to the top of the charts regularly in the 1980s, with albums like Theatre of Pain and Dr. Feelgood bringing them sold-out venues across the globe.

The band’s wild lies eventually caught up with them, and by the early ’90s, the band had disbanded due to lineup changes, legal issues, and a general lack of stability. Reuniting with the original line-up in the early 2000s catapulted them back to prominence as a popular band from their pop-metal era. A full-length movie about their controversial early years called The Dirt was released in 2019 and chronicles the band’s rise to fame via a series of albums and tours.

Mötley Crüe was formed in January 1981 by Nikki Sixx, Greg Leon (vocals/guitar), and Tommy Lee (drums). For the last two years, Leon has served as Randy Rhoads’ replacement in Quiet Riot. A disagreement with Sixx led to his being dropped from the band many months later. “Mottley Krue,” the guitar alias of former member Bob “Mick Mars” Deal, has joined the band as a replacement.

Rock Candy singer Vincent Neil Wharton was sought after when the group changed the moniker and added a pair of umlauts. It wasn’t until Rock Candy’s other members stated that they were re-forming as a new wave band, that Neil agreed to join. Mötley Crüe became a cult favorite on the L.A. music scene because of Neil’s involvement, which included such stunts as putting Sixx’s trousers on fire during a song.

Allan Coffman, the band’s manager, funded the recording of a first album. Lethur Records, an indie label founded by Coffman and the band, issued Too Fast for Love in November 1981, which sold a stunning 20,000 copies. Also, it sparked a Canadian tour that made news for the band’s bizarre behavior on the aircraft, including bringing bags of pornographic material past airport security and receiving death threats from enraged fans. Mötley Crüe’s sensationalist appeal was further bolstered by such exposure, which led to the kind of horrified press coverage the band craved.

For $25 million, the band inked a new deal with Elektra after forming Mötley Records. However, when the music business began to focus more on grunge, the band’s spirit began to break down under the strain of trying to stay up. This led to Neil’s resignation or departure from Mötley Crüe’s following record, which was replaced by Scream’s John Corabi at the time. Mötley Crüe debuted at number seven in the United States in 1994 and ultimately became a gold-selling album.

An effort to adopt a new, grungier sound, as well as the band’s accompanying tour, was commercially a failure, though. In 1997, Neil rejoined the band when Corabi was sacked by the label and Generation Swine was released. Generation Swine debuted at number four despite a massive marketing push, but it failed to yield any notable singles. Former Kiss guitarist Bruce Kulick joined Corabi in the band called Union.

Tommy Lee departed the band in 1999 to create Methods of Mayhem, which went on to record a self-titled debut album later that year after a number of acrimonious interactions with Neil. As a way to commemorate the band’s purchase of the Mötley Crüe library, Randy Castillo, a drummer who had previously worked with Ozzy Osbourne, took his position as the band’s new drummer.

To little fanfare and on the eve of the required tour Castillo was struck by an unidentified ailment, New Tattoo was released in the summer of 2000. Hole’s drummer (and lifetime Crüe fan) Samantha Maloney briefly filled in for the band while he recovered at home.

An autobiography written by the band, titled The Dirt, was published in May 2001 and quickly became a best-seller. Sixx and Tantric collaborated on songs with Faith Hill, Tim McGraw, and James Michael during the period after the success of their first album, which spawned a short solo tour.

After Castillo passed away from cancer in the spring of his final year, the band decided to go on sabbatical once again. Reunion tour speculations were swiftly dispelled by Tommy Lee when Sixx said publicly that his relationship with Vince Neil was just too bad for any kind of reconciliation.

Even while the members of Mötley Crüe stayed committed to their own endeavors, rumors of a reunion persisted for the next two years. Both Tommy Lee and Vince Neil appeared in celebrity TV programs Lee in an NBC series about the drummer taking college courses — while Sixx toured and released a record with his new band, Brides of Destruction.

A full-scale reunion tour with all four original members was scheduled for 2005, marking the band’s first excursion since the late 1990s. During the tour, Mötley Crüe released Red, White & Crüe, a two-disc greatest hits compilation, which went platinum in only six months after its release in February.

During the tour, Carnival of Sins Live was released, while Saints of Los Angeles, a new album of original material, was released in 2008. The band members then announced plans for Crüe Fest, a summer package tour that brought in over $40 million in its first year, in line with their commitment to the road.

An international co-headlining tour with Kiss followed the second Crüe Fest in 2009 and ran until 2013. With Alice Cooper as a special guest, the band planned a farewell tour in 2014. Nashville Outlaws, a tribute album to Mötley Crüe including country musicians such Rascal Flatts, the Mavericks, and Big & Rich, was released at the same time as the band’s 70-date retirement tour. For the cinematic adaption of the band’s life, Mötley Crüe produced four new songs in 2018. Tracks from The Dirt’s soundtrack were included on the album’s release in March of this year.
