Pearl Jam was an American rock band formed in the early 1990s that contributed to the popularisation of grunge music and has remained a well-regarded alternative rock band into the twenty-first century. Eddie Vedder, rhythm guitarist Stone Gossard, bassist Jeff Ament, lead guitarist Mike McCready, and drummer Dave Krusen were the original members of Pearl Jam. Among the latter members were Jack Irons, Dave Abbruzzese, and Matt Cameron.

Pearl Jam was formed in Seattle in 1990 when Gossard and Ament, members of the glam-influenced rock band Mother Love Bone, decided to establish a new band after the death of their group’s lead vocalist, Andrew Wood. The band’s name is derived from the words “Pearl Jam.” Although the band was previously known by the name Mookie Blaylock, after a professional basketball player, they eventually agreed on the terms pearl and jam, the latter of which was inspired by hearing artist Neil Young perform and enjoying his “jam session” approach.

The band’s first album, Ten, was published in the year 1991. In the early 1990s, alternative rock had already begun to gain mainstream acceptance, thanks in large part to the popularity of Nirvana—who, like Pearl Jam, were both products of Seattle’s thriving music scene and Ten, a self-titled album from the band that included the major hits “Jeremy,” “Evenflow,” and “Alive,” and which went on to become a multimillion-selling album.

Pearl Jam joined Nirvana as the musical voice of Generation X, thanks to their ferocious stadium-style rock, which was accentuated by Vedder’s emotional baritone vocals. In addition, the group gained a reputation for standing up to the mainstream music business. Notably, they declined to make music videos for any of the songs on their second studio album, Vs (1993), and they canceled a tour in 1994 as a consequence of a violent dispute over ticket costs. Instead, the band arranged performances in venues that were far smaller than the stadiums where they were used to performing and experimented with unconventional ticket distribution strategies.

In 1994, the group released Vitalogy, their third multimillion-selling studio album, which includes the Grammy-winning hit “Spin The Black Circle.” It was the group’s third multimillion-selling album. Pearl Jam collaborated with Neil Young on the album Mirror Ball (1995), and then issued No Code (1996), a record that some fans found to be a stylistic departure from their previous work.

Yield (1998) and Binaural (2000) were not economic hits, despite positive critical reception. Pearl Jam, on the other hand, continued to be a big concert attraction, and their European tour in 2000 was documented on 25 live and unedited CDs. Even while the politically charged Riot Act (2002) was a good rock album, its intensity could not compare to that of the band’s eponymous first album (2006).

Critics and fans loved the band’s return to its arena-rock style, and tracks such as “World Wide Suicide” evoked the rage and immediacy of the band’s first album, “Jeremy.”

In 2007, Vedder released his first solo album, Into the Wild, which served as the theme for the film of the same name starring Sean Penn. A young guy who turned his back on civilization to live in the Alaska wilderness was shown in the film, and Vedder’s award-winning soundtrack caught the spirit of the film with sparse music and lyrics that echoed old American roots songs. In 2011, he released his second solo album, Ukulele Songs, which was well received.

Pearl Jam returned to the studio with Brendan O’Brien shortly after to begin work on the follow-up to Backspacer, which was released in September. “Mind Your Manners” was the first single from the resultant album, Lightning Bolt, which was released in July 2013 along with the announcement of the album.

Lightning Bolt was released in October 2013 and is a darker album with lengthier tracks than its short, sharp predecessor. It is influenced by both Pink Floyd and punk, and it is a darker record than its predecessor. Several tours of Latin America and North America followed over the following several years, and in April 2017, Pearl Jam was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame by late-night television host David Letterman.

It was in September of that year that the band released Let’s Play Two, a live double CD and DVD package that documented a pair of gigs that were filmed at Chicago’s iconic Wrigley Field in September of that year. The Legacy label released Pearl Jam’s 1992 MTV Unplugged show on vinyl for the first time in 2019, marking the first time the concert has been released on vinyl in over a decade. “Dance of the Clairvoyants,” the first song from the band’s eleventh studio album, Gigaton, was released in January 2020.

Gigaton, Pearl Jam’s third studio album, was released in March and saw the band taking on climate change and other politically hot themes with the help of co-producer Josh Evans.

This was the first release to make use of Apple’s iTunes LP format, which is a software enhancement that is intended to more closely replicate the experience of listening to a physical album by including liner notes, lyric sheets, and photographs of the band. The band debuted its 2009 album, Backspacer, on the social networking site MySpace, and it was one of the first to do so.

A song titled Gigaton (2020) saw the band speak out against the dangers of global warming. Among their concert albums were Live on Ten Legs (2011), a collection of concert highlights from 2003 to 2010, and Let’s Play Two (2017), a CD/DVD commemorating the band’s pair of 2016 concerts at Wrigley Field in Chicago.
