When AC/DC came out in the 1980s, they were an Australian heavy metal band known for their dramatic, high-energy performances. Bon Scott, Malcolm Young, Angus Young, Malcolm Young, Bon Scott, Brian Johnson, Phil Rudd, and an unidentified third member were the primary members of the band, which was formed in Glasgow, Scotland, in the late 1960s (b. December 14, 1949, Romford, Essex, England).

Formed AC/DC with Angus on lead guitar and Malcolm on rhythm guitar in Sydney, Australia, in 1973, while the Young brothers were still in high school. During the 1970s, AC/blues-based DC became one of Australia’s most successful bands when the Youngs migrated to Melbourne and changed the rest of the band’s lineup. In 1976, the band relocated to London and had their first UK success with Let There Be Rock.

It was the publication of Highway to Hell in 1979 that propelled the band to international fame. Scott sang lead, with Rudd on drums, Williams on bass, and the Youngs on backing vocals. Despite Scott’s untimely death in February 1980 from an alcohol-related overdose, the band’s tight, clean metal punch and bawdy bad-boy image were enhanced by new vocalist Brian Johnson’s falsetto.

One million copies of the band’s third studio album, For Those About to Rock (1981), were sold in the United States alone when it was released in 1980. There were many line-up changes following their most successful years on tour, which occurred in the early and mid-1980s.

The band’s train came to a stop on February 19, 1980, when Bon Scott died. According to the official coroner’s conclusions, he “drank himself to death.” When the band broke up in March, Brian Johnson stepped in to fill in for Scott. In the next year, they recorded Back in Black, which became their most popular album, selling more than 10 million copies in the United States alone.

With their hit tune Over Those About to Rock We Salute You, the band went on to become one of the biggest rock bands in the world for the next several years, reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100. When Rudd left Flick of the Switch in 1983, Simon Wright was brought in to take his position.

It wasn’t until The Razor’s Edge was released in 1990 that AC/commercial DC was able to reverse their slump, with the release of “Thunderstruck,” that they were able to return to their pre-Flick of the Switch position. Though they were no longer the commercial powerhouses they were in the late 1970s, AC/DC managed to maintain their status as a popular concert draw in the 1990s, despite their decline in popularity.

It was in the fall of 1995 that the band’s sixteenth studio album, Ballbreaker, was released. Some of AC/most history’s favorable reviews were given to this album, which was produced by Rick Rubin and debuted at number four on the American charts and sold more than a million copies in its first six months on the market. Similar results were achieved with the early 2000s introduction of the Stiff Upper Lip.

When AC/DC signed a multi-album deal with Sony in 2001, the band returned to the studio in 2008 to record Black Ice. Several nations, including Australia, the United States, and the United Kingdom, saw economic success with the album. When Iron Man 2 came out in 2011, the band’s music was used extensively, and a compilation CD entitled Iron Man 2 was released in conjunction with the film.

By the time they began working on a new album with producer Brendan O’Brien in 2014, AC/DC had revealed that Malcolm Young had dementia and had departed the band. During the band’s 40th anniversary tour, Stevie Young, Malcolm’s nephew, filled in for Malcolm and eventually became a full-time band member.

Rock or Bust drummer Phil Rudd was arrested only a few days before the album’s December release on accusations of attempting to plan a murder, threatening to kill, and possessing cannabis and methamphetamine, among other charges. The other allegations remained, and it was not obvious if the drummer would continue to play with the band going forward even after the organized murder claims were dropped.

With the publication of Rock or Bust and preparations for a 2015 global tour, AC/DC persevered. An American actor, Malcolm Young passed away in November of 2017 at the age of 64. For their 17th studio album, the band reunited with producer Brendan O’Brien after a two-year hiatus and recorded their third straight number-one album in Australia and the United States with the help of Power Up.
