Aerosmith is a 1970s Boston-based American rock band. Steven Tyler (lead vocals), Joe Perry (guitar), Tom Hamilton (bass), Joey Kramer (drums), and Brad Whitford make up the band (guitar). Their blues-based hard rock style has integrated elements of pop-rock, heavy metal, glam metal, and rhythm and blues, and has inspired many following rock acts.  They’ve been dubbed “Boston’s Bad Boys” and “America’s Greatest Rock & Roll Band.”

Tyler and Perry’s primary songwriting duo is dubbed the “Toxic Twins.”Perry and Hamilton were in a band together called the Jam Band before forming Aerosmith with Tyler, Kramer, and guitarist Ray Tabano in 1971. Tabano was replaced by Whitford in 1971. They had a streak of multi-platinum albums, beginning with their self-titled debut in 1973 and ending with Get Your Wings in 1974.  Toys in the Attic (1975) and Rocks in the Attic (1976) were the band’s first mainstream hits (1976).

In 1977 and 1979, the albums Draw the Line and Night in the Ruts were released. Throughout the 1970s, the band toured extensively and had a dozen Hot 100 singles, including “Sweet Emotion,” their first Top 40 hit, and “Dream On” and “Walk This Way,” both of which reached the Top 10. By the end of the decade, they had established themselves as one of the most successful hard rock bands in the world, with a devoted fan base known as the “Blue Army.”  Perry and Whitford left in 1979 and 1981 due to drug abuse and internal strife.

The band did not fare well, and the album Rock in a Hard Place (1982) could not live up to expectations. Aerosmith was chosen to be featured in the Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith in 1999, providing the ride’s soundtrack and theme at both Disney’s Hollywood Studios and, formerly, Disneyland Paris in the Walt Disney Studios Park, which opened in 2002 and closed in 2019, to be replaced by an Iron Man and the Avengers attraction in the upcoming Avengers Campus.

Steven Tyler and Joe Perry reunited with Run–D.M.C. and Kid Rock for a collaborative live performance of “Walk This Way” at the MTV Video Music Awards on September 9, 1999, as a forerunner to the Girls of Summer Tour. The band performed a brief tour of Japan to commemorate the new millennium, and also contributed the song “Angel’s Eye” to the 2000 film Charlie’s Angels.  They completed work on their second album in December 2000.

Aerosmith was named as the main act for the Download Festival in Donington Park, England, on February 15, 2010. Festival promoter Andy Copping announced Tyler as the show’s frontman. The band will perform at the Sweden Rock Festival on June 10 in Sölvesborg, which will precede the June 13 event.

Perry praised Tyler’s role as frontman at the Donington event, naming him “the best lead singer on the globe.”  The first batch of dates for the band’s upcoming Cocked, Locked, Ready to Rock Tour were revealed on February 24. The band performed seven shows in South and Central America in May, followed by eleven shows in Europe in June and July. On this tour, the band performed for the first time in Colombia, Peru, and Greece.

In late July, August, and September, the band performed 24 performances in North America. Many of the shows were at venues that the band had canceled in 2009. The band shared the stage with fellow Bostonians the J. Geils Band at Fenway Park as part of the tour.

Tyler unintentionally hit Joe Perry in the head with his microphone stand during a gig in Wantagh, New York, in August 2010, causing problems on the band’s Cocked, Locked, and Ready to Rock Tour and Perry colliding with Tyler on stage in Toronto, causing Tyler to fall off the stage. Tyler was assisted back up by supporters and Perry at the Wantagh event, and both shows went on. Perry had a minor head injury at the Wantagh show.

Tyler was helped back up by fans and Perry at the Toronto show. Around the same time as these incidents, tensions between Perry and Tyler erupted again over Tyler’s plans to join American Idol as a talent judge. Perry chastised Tyler for not informing the rest of the band, claiming Tyler “found out on the internet, like the rest of the world,” and that no one else in the band was aware of the situation. Tyler officially signed on with the show on August 18, according to reports.

When asked about this in October, Perry said he understood Tyler’s motivations and wished him well, but that he would look for other projects because “I’m tired of waiting around, so I’m not passing up anything right now.” Tyler and Perry stated in 2009 when announcing the Cocked, Locked, and Ready to Rock Tour that the next thing on the list was a new Aerosmith album, the group’s first since 2004’s Honkin’ on Bobo.

In 2008, the band began recording with producer Brendan O’Brien but stopped due to Tyler’s health issues.  Tyler believes he has the time and energy to continue fronting the band while still serving as a judge on American Idol, according to Aerosmith bassist Tom Hamilton.

who told the Boston Herald in September 2010. As Hamilton put it, “Steven has stated emphatically that the way his time is divided on the show allows him to work on a record. He’s been making a point of reminding everyone of that, so perhaps it’ll turn out that way.” Brad Whitford stated on November 5, 2010, that the recording sessions will most likely take place in Los Angeles, where American Idol is based, and that a world tour will follow.
