Alice in Chains’ origins was in heavy metal, not punk. Before Alice in Chains was formed in 1987 by Jerry Cantrell and Layne Staley, both had performed in metal bands, and the band’s debut, Facelift, was released in 1990, years before Nirvana’s Nevermind made the underground mainstream.
