Blink-182 is an American pop-punk band that was established in 1992 in Poway, California, a suburb of the city of San Diego. The current line-up of the band includes bassist and singer Mark Hoppus, drummer Travis Barker, and guitarist and vocalist Matt Skiba, among others. It is widely acknowledged that Blink-182 was a seminal band in the development of pop-punk.

The band’s blend of pop melodies with fast-paced punk rock provided more radio-friendly accessibility than previous bands, with the exception of Green Day and The Offspring, among others. The band, which was formed by Hoppus, guitarist, and singer Tom DeLonge, and drummer Scott Raynor in the early 1990s, rose to prominence in the Southern California punk scene, where they were known for their high-energy live concerts and irreverent lyrical potty humor.

In the early 2000s, blink-182 became one of the most popular bands in the Southern California punk scene. Blink-182, who emerged in the aftermath of Green Day’s pop-punk boom, developed a devoted following thanks to their catchy, high-energy tunes. It was their third album, Enema of the State, released in 1999, that finally made them a household name.

During the fading days of MTV’s musical programming in the late 1990s, they released a consistent string of singles, supported by funny, tongue-in-cheek music videos. California, which debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 in 2016, is the band’s fifth No. 1 album and the band’s second No. 1 on the Billboard 200.

Tom DeLonge, Mark Hoppus, and Scott Raynor established Blink-182 in the suburbs of San Diego, California. Fly Swatter, the band’s first self-published EP, was released in 1993. Cheshire Cat, the band’s second album, was released in 1995 after the release of Buddha in 1994. Even though they were threatened with a lawsuit from an identically called Irish band, blink-182 went on the 1996-1997 Warped Tour alongside Pennywise and NOFX and appeared in several skate/surf/snowboarding films, making them a household brand.

Cargo and MCA released blink-182’s third album, Dude Ranch, in 1997. Due in part to the success of “Dammit (Growing Up),” Dude Ranch extended the group’s fanbase and achieved platinum status by the end of 1998. Enema of the State, the band’s fourth studio album, was released by MCA in the summer of 1999.

Travis Barker, previously of the Aquabats, joined the band on drums when Raynor quit halfway through a 1998 U.S. tour, which was produced by Jerry Finn (Green Day, Rancid). As if Dude Ranch wasn’t enough, Enema assisted the band in achieving the widespread status of toilet-humored pop-punk kings that Enema hinted to. MTV success stories included music videos for “What’s My Age?” “All the Small Things,” and “Adam’s Song”.

B182.com had a lengthy interview with Hoppus in August of that year. This conversation was all about blink-182 and the mysterious circumstances that led to the group’s breakup in the first place. Hoppus disagreed with DeLonge’s assertions, saying that the band had a good relationship at the time of their last record. Even though he had scheduled a last spring tour, DeLonge requested a half-year break from traveling to spend time with his family.

Hoppus and Barker reluctantly agreed, which resulted in the cancellation of the planned concert tour. Discussions about the band’s future recording projects led to more difficulties. As a result, Hoppus came to believe that blink-182 was no longer a viable band. As a result of their irritation with DeLonge’s hesitation, Hoppus and Barker created +44 near the conclusion of the European leg.

When the documentary on current punk music was announced on April 5, 2007, it included blink-182, Rancid, and Green Day. The film One Nine Nine Four examines the music scene of the 1990s. Robot Academy Films in Australia, the producers of the documentary, will assemble the band interviews and archival video into a final product. It’s scheduled to be out sometime in the first half of 2017. The film, which also stars NOFX and The Offspring, will be narrated by skateboarding great Tony Hawk.

Currently, Travis Barker of +44 has been questioned whether the band might reunite. He said “Tom and I haven’t spoken in a long time, so I’m not sure. Every day, Mark and I communicate.” Mark Hoppus updated his blog, himynameismark, on November 18, 2008, after Travis Barker was killed in a minor aircraft accident.

“Tom, Travis, and I have all talked together recently in the middle of all the other things that have been going on. We initially spoke over the phone, and then we met up for a few hours a few weeks ago. Great, pleasant dialogues have taken place. After four years apart, we’ve rekindled our friendship. Because it’s beneficial.”

This doesn’t indicate a reunion of blink-182, but they have finally started talking to one other again after a long period of time. Travis Barker’s close call with death in an aircraft accident in September 2008 and the loss of their longtime producer Jerry Finn were also discussed by Hoppus throughout the interview.

While speaking at the Grammy Awards in 2009, Blink-182 confirmed their reunion. The band’s official website issued a statement confirming the band’s return. The first new blink-182 song after an indefinite break debuted on KROQ at 10:30 a.m. on July 15, 2011, on Blink182.com. The first new blink-182 content after their indefinite sabbatical was published on Blink182.com in late July 14, 2011, then aired on Los Angeles radio station KROQ at 10:30 a.m. on July 15, 2011, according to Up All Night Songfacts.

Longtime producer Jerry Finn died of a brain hemorrhage and heart stroke in August 2008, when the band was still on sabbatical at the time and was later taken off of life support. Following an aircraft tragedy in September in which Barker and DJ AM were both critically wounded, Barker and two acquaintances of Barker’s died.

It took Barker 11 months to recuperate from his injuries, which resulted in the drummer developing post-traumatic stress disorder as a result of the experience. Blink-182 reunited with Weezer for a reunion tour in 2009 after a car accident spurred the band’s members to reconnect with the drummer in support of his rehabilitation. It was later that year that they entered the studio and started working on their sixth studio album, Neighborhoods, which was finally released in 2011 after many years of delays.

In 2012, the band members reunited for a 20th-anniversary tour. The release of the self-produced Dogs Eating Dogs EP signaled blink-182’s departure from Interscope later that year. A follow-up to Neighborhoods was discussed by blink-182 after a spate of sold-out shows in Los Angeles in 2013, as well as headline performances at the Reading and Leeds Festivals in August 2014.

As reported by Rolling Stone in January 2015, Hoppus and Barker said that DeLonge has departed the band and that Alkaline Trio guitarist Matt Skiba may stand in for him on future gigs. Blink-182’s lead singer DeLonge swiftly commented on Facebook, saying that he had not resigned from the band and that any future decisions had been made without his input.

Everything worked out in the end as Skiba was confirmed as a member of blink-182 and they began recording a new album at the end of 2013. “Bored to Death” was the debut song from the new group, which was released in April 2016. Blink-182 also issued a vinyl anthology Box Set that included all six of the band’s studio albums previous to California in the year of their California release.

They returned to the studio to record a follow-up and worked on other projects throughout the time between blink releases. Alkaline Trio released a new album, while Barker collaborated with Yungblud, Machine Gun Kelly, XXXTentacion, and other artists on his ever-expanding resume. With Hoppus’ Simple Creatures side project with Alex Gaskarth of All Time Low, he released two EPs.

According to Barker and Hoppus, blink-182’s ninth album, Nine, was released in 2019. In spite of the album cover’s bright and cheery colors, Nine had gloomy lyrical themes that sprang from Hoppus’ despair. Happy Days and Blame It on My Youth were also hit on the album. “Quarantine” was released by the band in 2020.
