In addition to Rick Allen on drums and Rick Savage on bass and Pete Willis on guitar, the band also features Vivian Campbell on guitar, Steve Clark on guitar, and Phil Collen on guitar. Def Leppard arrived on the heavy metal scene in 1980 as though they were seasoned veterans despite having an average age of barely 18.
Guitar Player Jim Schwartz said of the band: “This band regularly transcends the banal via sheer melodic fire and playing prowess.” As one of the best-selling rock and roll bands of all time, these heavy metal pioneers have carved out their unique sound in a genre characterized by hackneyed riffs and repetitive rhythms. After more than two decades, the band continues to create and record, achieving success with almost every album.
Joe Elliott, Pete Willis, Steve Clark, Rick Savage, and Rick Allen all grew up in the steel-producing town of Sheffield, England, where the band’s five founding members all resided. Elliott, the band’s main vocalist, used to daydream about starting a band in high school, inventing song lists, logos, and brand names while the rest of his classmates were concentrating on their homework. For him, “rock and roll was always the ultimate fantasy” since he “figured out pretty early on that I wasn’t going to be an expert in either brain surgery or nuclear physics.”
Def Leppard was, in many respects, the quintessential ’80s hard rock band. Few bands rocked harder or better encapsulated the mood of the era. As part of the New Wave of British Strong Metal in the late ’70s, Def Leppard quickly established a following outside of the genre by focusing more on melody than heavy guitars.
By the time of 1983’s Pyromania, they were well-positioned for mainstream success, thanks in part to the band’s clever exploitation of the then-new MTV network. Hysteria, their breakthrough song from 1987, was followed by another massive smash, Adrenalize, in 1992, which rejected the trend toward grunge that was taking place at the time. That was followed by a period of consistent touring and record releases, with occasional surprises like 2008’s Yeah! that brought back memories of the band’s heyday and a loyal following.
In 1977, Rick Savage on bass and Pete Willis on guitar established a band in Sheffield called Def Leppard. Several months later, vocalist Joe Elliott, a fervent admirer of Mott the Hoople and T. Rex, joined the group under the moniker “Deaf Leopard”. After a spelling change, the group started performing local Sheffield pubs with the addition of a now-forgotten drummer, and within a year, guitarist Steve Clark and a new drummer were added to the lineup. They released their first EP, Getcha Rocks Off, on their own label, Bludgeon Riffola, later that year. As a result of the EP’s popularity, it received airing on the BBC.
Rick Allen, a 15-year-old British drummer, joined Def Leppard after their first album Getcha Rocks Off was released, and the band immediately rose to prominence in the UK’s music press. Peter Mensch, the manager of AC/DC, quickly became their manager and helped them get a deal with Mercury Records. The band’s full-length debut, On Through the Night, was released in 1980 and immediately became a smash in the United Kingdom.
It also had extensive exposure in the United States, where it peaked at number 51. As well as doing their own performances, Def Leppard also opened up for Ozzy Osbourne, Sammy Hagar, and Judas Priest on their year-long tour of the United Kingdom and the United States. In 1981, the group released High ‘n’ Dry, which went platinum in the United States because of MTV’s heavy playing of the single “Bringin’ on the Heartbreak.”
Def Leppard’s future without a drummer appeared bleak, but Allen started learning to play custom-made electronic equipment manufactured by Simmons as soon as spring 1985 rolled around. Within a few months, Lange rejoined the band, and he instructed the band to start from scratch. The band returned to the stage for the European Monsters of Rock tour in the summer of 1986 after finishing off their recording sessions.
Early in 1987, Def Leppard finished recording their fourth album, which they renamed Hysteria. Critics slammed the album for sacrificing Leppard’s metal origins for sweet pop embellishments when it was released in spring of that year. “Women,” the album’s first single, failed to catch on, but the release of “Animal” boosted Hysteria.
First UK Top 40 success for Def Leppard, but more crucially it sparked a streak of six consecutive US Top 20 songs that included “Hysteria,” ‘Pour Some Sugar on Me,’ ‘Armageddon It,’ and ‘Rocket,’ the last of which arrived in 1989, two years after the publication of Hysteria. Def Leppard dominated high school metal during those two years, dominating the pop charts and MTV, and even when the gritty hard rock of Guns N’ Roses took root in 1988, youths and bands alike mimicked their teased hair and torn trousers.
Songs from the Sparkle Lounge, the band’s eighth studio album, debuted at number five in 2008 and was accompanied by a profitable summer tour. Mirror Ball: Live & More, a three-disc live album comprising a complete performance, three new studio tracks, and DVD footage, was mostly based on material from the tour. Two years later, Viva! was released as a live album.
Def Leppard’s 1987 smash “Hysteria” was performed in its entirety on the first disc, while a compilation of previously unreleased songs was included on the second. Def Leppard, the band’s 11th studio album, was released in 2015 and was their first original album since 2008.
Def Leppard’s backing band And There Will Be a Next Time, released a live CD in February 2017. Hysteria’s 30th anniversary was commemorated later that year with a Super Deluxe Edition. As 2018 progressed, Def Leppard released The Collection, Vol. 1, and The Story So Far: The Best of Def Leppard, which comprised the band’s first four studio albums as well as several previously unreleased songs.
With The Collection Vol. 2, a compilation of their 1990s songs, and The Story So Far Vol. 2: Hits & B-Sides, Vol. 2: Hits & B-Sides, Vol. 2, the band continued its ’90s run and beyond with new material. With frequent tours and a Las Vegas residency, they released The Early Years 79-81 in 2020 which included their first two albums, a live set, and BBC recordings.
