Sarah Leigh Fogleman, better known by her pen name Ally Carter, was born on January 1, 1974, in New York City. She is an American novelist who specializes in young adult fiction as well as adult fiction. In order to distinguish the works she would write under the pen name “Ally Carter” from her other literary work, Carter chose the moniker “Ally Carter.” Choosing the surname “Carter” was done deliberately so that her novels would appear next to those of Jennifer Crusie, a fellow adult fiction novelist, on the shelves of bookstores and public libraries.

Carter received her bachelor’s degree in agricultural economics from Oklahoma State University in 1997 and then went on to obtain her master’s degree in agricultural resource and managerial economics from Cornell University. Her spare time was spent writing two adult novels, the first of which was published on December 6, 2005, and the second of which was published on November 7, 2006, both of which were set in the United Kingdom. She then launched her writing career as a young-adult author with the Gallagher Girls series, which she eventually expanded into the Heist Society series, as well as a number of novellas based on these two series.
