Barack’s mother remarried an Indonesian oil manager and relocated to Jakarta when he was six years old. Later, he described Indonesia as both lush and a harrowing exposure to tropical poverty. His grandfather was a furniture salesman and an unsuccessful insurance agent, and his grandmother worked in a bank, but Barack was accepted to Punahou School, Hawaii’s top prep school.
