He was eventually acquired by the Braves, but he never appeared in an MLB game for them eithe Cox played for the Yankees for two seasons, mostly at third base. Because of his bad knees, Cox became the second of four stopgap players between Clete Boyer and Graig Nettles.

This team included future major leaguers Ron Guidry, Mickey Klutts, Terry Whitfield, and Juan Bernhardt. Cox took over as manager of the Atlanta Braves prior to the 1978 season, inheriting a team that had finished last in the league the previous two seasons and had a worse record than the two expansion teams, the Toronto Blue Jays and the Seattle Mariners, in 1977. The Braves finished last in both 1978 and 1979 after starting from scratch

Cox took over as manager of the Toronto Blue Jays in 1982, and the team steadily improved during his four years in charge. The Blue Jays won the American League East in 1985, Cox’s fourth season with the club. Following sixteen seasons of a best-of-five format, the American League Championship Series was expanded to a best-of-seven format that season. That distinction proved decisive when Cox’s Blue Jays became only the fifth team in history to lose a playoff series after leading the Kansas City Royals 3 games to 1. Cox rejoined the Braves as general manager after they were eliminated. After going through two managers in less than five years, with disastrous results in attendance and outlook, Cox fired Russ Nixon in June 1990 and appointed himself as manager..

Cox had spent the previous four seasons acquiring talented players such as Ron Gant, Tom Glavine, Steve Avery, Pete Smith, and David Justice. He was also in charge of selecting Chipper Jones with the first overall pick in the 1990 draught. [2] The Braves, along with the Minnesota Twins, became the first team to go from last place to first place in the same season in 1991.  Despite their defeat, the Braves went on to win the division title fourteen years in a row. Cox’s 15 division titles are a Major League record for a manager. The Braves have won the National League pennant and appeared in the World Series five times, including four times in a six-year span (1991, 1992, 1995, and 1996). In 1992, Cox’s Braves led the Pittsburgh Pirates 3-1 in the National League Championship Series before losing games 5 and 6, but they won Game 7 on Francisco Cabrera’s ninth-inning, two-out, pinch-hit, two-run single. In 1993, the Braves had the best record in baseball following a pennant race in which the Braves overcame a ten-game deficit in August to beat the San Francisco Giants by going 51-17 over the final two and a half months of the season to win the division by one game. However, they were defeated in the National League Championship Series by the Philadelphia Phillies in six games. Cox’s only World Series title came in 1995, when the Atlanta Braves defeated the Cleveland Ithrowing block as a catcher that hindered his ability to play. Murphy went on to win two National League Most Valuable Player Awards and five Gold Gloves, and he was regarded as one of the best players of the 1980s. [1] The Braves finished fourth in 1980, with their first record above.500 since 1972. However, Cox was undone by the 1981 baseball strike, when the Braves finished fifth and owner Ted Turner fired him
