He began his academic career at the “School of the Madeleine,” a Catholic high school in Berkeley. BIOGRAPHY:

Olivier, who was also a member of CCR at the time of its formation.  Tom Fogerty, Fogerty’s older brother, was also a guitarist and bandmate in the group that would go on to become known as CCR. During his summer vacations, John Fogerty would go fishing in Putah Creek, near Winters, California, which later became the inspiration for the Creedence Clearwater Revival song “Green River.”

The Golliwogs were active from 1959 through 1966. The Golliwogs are the focus of this article. The “Blue Velvets” were a cover band that Fogerty established in 1959 while still in junior high school with bassist Stu Cook and drummer Doug Clifford, which became a hit. A number of rock and roll pioneers, including Little Richard[8] and Bo Diddley, served as inspiration for the band.

Later, Fogerty’s brother Tom became a member of the band. Fantasy Records signed the band in 1964, and the rest is history. It was changed to the “Golliwogs” by a record industry executive without the band’s knowledge or agreement. The band had previously been referred to as the “Blue Velvets.” Sixteen singles were released by the group, none of which were commercially successful.  Creedence Clearwater Revival was active from 1967 through 1972.

When Fogerty received his conscription notice for military service during the Vietnam War in 1966, he went to a local Army reserve recruiter and was instantly accepted into the program. Despite his gratitude, Fogerty suspected the recruiter had pre-dated the documents so that it would take effect before the draught letter was delivered. He was stationed at Fort Bragg, Fort Knox, and Fort Lee before being honorably discharged from the Army in 1967.

That same year, the band adopted the moniker Creedence Clearwater Revival to better reflect its musical roots. At this point, he took over as the band’s lead singer in the absence of his brother. By 1968, the band’s fortunes had begun to turn for the better.

The band published their self-titled debut album, which included the tune “Susie Q,” which became a smash for them. Many other popular singles and albums followed, beginning with “Proud Mary” and the LP Bayou Country, which went on to become a classic. As the band’s songwriter (as well as the band’s lead singer and lead guitarist), Fogerty believed that his artistic opinions should take precedence over those of the other members, resulting in resentment among the members.  Tom’s dissatisfaction with the group, along with his sense that he was being taken for granted, led to his departure from the group in January 1971.

The other two members of the band, bassist Stu Cook and drummer Doug Clifford want a more prominent part in the band’s future development. Cook and Clifford were required to share equal songwriting and vocal time on the band’s final album, Mardi Gras, which was released in April 1972 and featured the band’s final two singles, the 1971 hit “Sweet Hitch-Hiker” and “Someday Never Comes,” which barely made it into the Billboard Top 20.

In an attempt to keep the band together, Fogerty insisted Cook and Clifford share equal songwriting and vocal time on what became the band’ Cook and Clifford informed Fogerty that Revival was being watered by the audience. Between 1968 and 1972, the trio had nine top-ten singles and eight gold albums to their credit. It wasn’t until 1993 that they were officially admitted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

Following the dissolution of CCR in 1972, Fogerty went on to have a successful solo career.
