Bonny Doon Bio

The community of Bonny Doon is perched atop Ben Lomond Mountain, in the Coast Range, and is a popular tourist destination. Because of its proximity to Monterey Bay, the area is a rich and fertile environment for growing a variety of crops. Nonprofit partners are getting closer to opening the first public trail system in the San Vicente Redwoods, a 9,000-acre forest in Northern Santa Cruz County that stretches nearly to the coast near Davenport and nearly to Bonny Doon. The trail system will be open to the public in the fall of 2019.

The Land Trust of Santa Cruz County, in partnership with the Save the Redwoods League, manages public access to the forest and conservation efforts within it. Beginning in 2011, the groups worked in collaboration with the Amah Mutsun Tribal Band to restore and revitalize the land.

“It’s been a long time coming, and we’ve had a lot of setbacks, but we’re very excited to be in the construction phase of the ridgeline to shoreline trail project, and we’re even more excited to think we’ll be finished by the fall,” said Sarah Newkirk, executive director of the Land Trust of Santa Cruz County.

However, many trees are resprouting, and rare fire-following plants are sprouting up in unexpected places.

The construction of 8.5 miles of track, which could serve as the first part of a new sky to sea path system nicknamed the “ridgeline to the shoreline,” is expected to begin in April. Horseback riders, mountain bikers, and hikers will be able to hit the trails as soon as the fall season begins.
