On TV Guide’s 50 Greatest TV Stars of All Time list in 1996, Letterman was ranked 45th.

On TV Guide’s 50 Greatest TV Shows of All Time list in 2002, The Late Show with David Letterman was ranked seventh. He’s also a film and television producer.  Conan O’Brien (his successor on Late Night), Stephen Colbert (his successor on The Late Show), Jimmy Fallon, Jimmy Kimmel, John Oliver, and Seth Meyers are among the late-night hosts who have mentioned Letterman’s impact. Letterman is presently the host of Netflix’s My Next Guest Needs No Introduction with David Letterman.

Letterman was born in 1947 in Indianapolis, Indiana, to two sisters, one older and the other younger. His father was a florist, Harry Joseph Letterman (April 15, 1915 – February 13, 1973). His mother, Dorothy Marie Letterman Mengering (née Hofert; July 18, 1921 – April 11, 2017), a church secretary for the Second Presbyterian Church of Indianapolis, appeared on Letterman’s show on occasion, mostly around holidays and birthdays.

Letterman grew up in the Broad Ripple neighbourhood of Indianapolis, about 12 miles from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. He liked to collect model automobiles, especially racers. He told an Esquire interviewer in 2000 that he liked his father’s ability to crack jokes and be the light of the party when he was a kid. When David was a young boy, Harry Joseph Letterman survived a heart attack at the age of 36. Letterman’s fear of losing his father was persistent as he grew up.  At the age of 57, the elder Letterman died after a second heart attack in 1973.
Letterman’s connection to Ball State University was honoured in 2006 when the David Letterman Communication and Media Building was renamed in his honour.

He planned to attend Indiana University, but his grades were not good enough, so he went to Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana, according to the Ball State Daily News. He is a Sigma Chi fraternity member who graduated from what was then the Department of Radio and Television in 1969. Letterman, a self-described average student, later created a fund at Ball State for “C students.” Despite having registered for the draught and passing his physical after graduation, he was not drafted for service in Vietnam due to a draught lottery number of 346. (out of 366).

He was sacked for his irreverent attitude toward classical music. He then became active in the development of WAGO-AM 570, an university radio station (now WWHI, 91.3).He attributes his choice of career to Paul Dixon, the host of the Paul Dixon Show, a Cincinnati-based talk show that was also broadcast in Indianapolis when he was growing up:  I had just graduated from college [in 1969] and had no idea what I wanted to accomplish with my life. Then I saw him doing it [on TV] all of a sudden. And I said to myself, “Wow, that’s exactly what I want to accomplish!”

Letterman began his career as a radio talk show presenter on WNTS (AM) and as an anchor and weatherman on Indianapolis television station WLWI (which changed its call sign to WTHR in 1976) shortly after graduating from Ball State in 1969. He gained notoriety for his erratic on-air antics, which included celebrating a tropical storm on being upgraded to a hurricane and forecasting hailstones “the size of canned hams.” He also reported the weather and the day’s extreme high and low temperatures for fictitious cities (“Eight inches of snow in Bingree and surrounding areas”), as well as claiming that the state border between Indiana and Ohio had been erased due to a satellite map error, which he blamed on dirty political dealings. ( ) “The border between Indiana and Ohio has been eliminated, resulting in one massive state. Personally, I am opposed to it. I’m at a loss for what to do “( He also starred in a local kiddie show, hosted a late-night TV show called “Freeze-Dried Movies,” where he made jokes (he once acted out a scene from Godzilla using plastic dinosaurs), and presented a discussion show called Clover Power, where he interviewed 4-H members about their projects.

Letterman’s first national televised appearance was as a pit road reporter for ABC Sports’ tape-delayed coverage of the Indianapolis 500 in 1971.  Mario Andretti, who had just crashed out of the race, was interviewed by Letterman. Letterman went to Los Angeles, California, in 1975, with the help of his then-wife Michelle and other Sigma Chi fraternity members, with the goal of becoming a comedy writer. He and Michelle loaded their possessions into his pickup truck and drove west.

He still owned the truck in 2012. He began performing stand-up comedy at The Comedy Store in Los Angeles.  Letterman joined a group of comedians recruited by Walker to create jokes for his stand-up act, which included Jay Leno, Paul Mooney, Robert Schimmel, Richard Jeni, Louie Anderson, Elayne Boosler, Byron Allen, Jack Handey, and Steve Oedekerk at various periods, with an endorsement from George Miller.

He co-starred in the Barry Levinson-produced comedy special Peeping Times, which aired in January 1978, and presented a 1977 pilot for a game show called The Riddlers (which was never taken up). Later that year, Letterman joined Mary Tyler Moore’s variety show, Mary, as a cast member. He appeared as a parody of EST leader Werner Erhard on Mork & Mindy and on game shows like The $20,000 Pyramid, The Gong Show, Hollywood Squares, Password Plus, and Liar’s Club, as well as the Canadian cooking show Celebrity Cooks (November 1977), talk shows like 90 Minutes Live (February 24 and April 14, 1978), and The Mike

He was also considered for the lead part in the 1980 picture Airplane!, but Robert Hays was cast instead. Letterman’s caustic, sardonic comedy drew scouts for The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, and he became a regular guest on the show soon after. He became Carson’s favourite and began appearing on the show as a regular guest host in 1978. Carson is the individual who has had the largest impact on Letterman’s career.

David Letterman Biography/Wiki

Letterman was retained on the payroll by NBC in order to try him out in a different time slot. Bill Murray was the first guest on Late Night with David Letterman, which premiered on February 1, 1982.  Murray went on to become one of Letterman’s most frequent guests, appearing on his later CBS show’s commemoration of his 30th anniversary in late-night television on January 31, 2012, and his final CBS episode on May 20, 2015. The show aired at 12:30 a.m. Eastern Time Monday through Thursday, following The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson (a Friday night broadcast was added in June 1987). It quickly gained a cult following for being edgy and surprising (particularly among college students). In verbal sparring battles with Cher(who even called him a “asshole” on the show), Shirley MacLaine, Charles Grodin, and Madonna, Letterman’s reputation as an acerbic interviewer was confirmed. The show also contained comic segments and running characters, with a style that was largely influenced by Steve Allen’s shows from the 1950s and 1960s.

Regular features on the show included “Stupid Pet Tricks” (which originated on Letterman’s morning show), Stupid Human Tricks, dropping various objects off the roof of a five-story building, demonstrations of unorthodox clothing (such as suits made of Alka-Seltzer,Velcro and suet), a recurring Top 10 list, the Monkey-Cam (and the Audacity of

Letterman also used a bullhorn to interrupt a live interview on The Today Show, announcing that he was the NBC News president and that he was not wearing any pants;walking across the hall to Studio 6B, the news studio for WNBC-TV at the time, and interrupting Al Roker’s weather segments during Live at Five; and staging “elevator races,” complete with commentary by NBC Sports’ Bob Costas. Andy Kaufman (with a neck brace) made an appearance in 1982 with professional wrestler Jerry Lawler, who slapped and knocked the comic to the ground (the incident was later proven to be staged by Lawler and Kaufman’s buddy Bob Zmuda).

When Johnny Carson departed in 1992, many fans assumed that David Letterman would take over as host of The Tonight Show. Letterman left NBC to host his own late-night show, the Late Show with David Letterman, on CBS, opposite The Tonight Show at 11:30 p.m., when NBC instead offered the role to Jay Leno. The new show premiered on August 30, 1993, and was taped at the famous Ed Sullivan Theater, which was home to Ed Sullivan’s eponymous variety show from 1948 until 1971. CBS spent $8 million on improvements in preparation for Letterman’s arrival.  Letterman was also given a three-year, $14 million-per-year contract by CBS, more than doubling his Late Show income.

While it was expected that Letterman’s distinct style and sense of humour would be preserved with the shift, Late Show was not a carbon copy of his previous NBC show. The monologue has been elongated. Paul Shaffer and the World’s Most Dangerous Band followed Letterman to CBS, although they were renamed the CBS Orchestra and included a brass section (at Shaffer’s request); Carson had ordered a small band while Letterman was in the 12:30 slot.

“Letterman’s innovation… acquired power from its rigid formalism,” according to Time magazine, and he was “a fascinatingly dissatisfied oddball trapped inside a more traditional talk show,” according to his biographer Jason Zinoman.

The Tonight Show, hosted by Jay Leno for 22 years (save from June 1, 2009 to January 22, 2010, when Conan O’Brien took over), was The Late Show’s main adversary. In 1993 and 1994, the Late Show consistently outperformed The Tonight Show in terms of ratings. However, ratings began to decline in 1995, and Leno’s show began to consistently outperform Letterman’s from the time Hugh Grant appeared on Leno’s show following Grant’s arrest for soliciting a prostitute.
