Angela Bassett is a well-known American actress who has been in several biographical films, including “What’s Love Got to Do with It” and “The Rosa Parks Story.” She has put her time and effort into a diverse variety of projects throughout the course of her lengthy career. It wasn’t until her field trip to Washington, D. C.
in the 11th grade, when she watched actor James Earl Jones perform in a performance of the play “Of Mice and Men” at the “Kennedy Center,” that she discovered she enjoyed acting. She worked a variety of odd jobs, including serving customers at a beauty salon and doing picture research for magazines such as “US News & World Report,” when she wasn’t performing on stage. After that, she began her playing career in theatre, and then went on to establish herself in cinema and television.
Angela Evelyn Bassett was born to Betty Jane and Daniel Benjamin Bassett on August 16, 1958, in the city of New York, in the United States of America. Her parents both had jobs in the medical field. When she was only 10 months old, her parents gave her up for adoption to live with Aunt Golden in Winston-Salem. Aunt Golden was her father’s sister.
Following the dissolution of her parent’s marriage, she and her younger sister, Danette, were sent to St. Petersburg, Florida, to live with their grandparents. Angela spent her Sundays going to church, where she participated in the chorus together with other children her age. Her mother would make her and her sister dance to “Motown” tracks that were playing on the radio, which was one of her favorite things to do.
At some time in the future, a nearby lady expressed interest in assisting the lads in the formation of a dance crew and offered her assistance. Because she had been a slacker throughout her time in high school, her mother was especially worried about how well her children performed in school. She didn’t want them to make the same errors she had. Angela participated in the “Upward Bound” program at “Boca Ciega High School,” from which she ultimately graduated.
She participated in a variety of clubs and organizations, including the choir, the theatre club, the debate team, and the student government. She received a bachelor of arts degree in African-American studies from Yale University in 1980, where she studied and graduated. Three years later, she received a Master of Fine Arts degree from the prestigious Yale School of Drama, from which she had graduated with honors. Angela Bassett started her career as an actress on stage, where she worked under the tutelage of the famous theatre director Lloyd Richards.
She performed in two August Wilson pieces when she was a member of the “Yale Repertory Theatre,” the first of which was Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom in 1984 and the second of which was Joe Turner’s Come and Gone in 1986. At the “Second Stage Theatre,” the drama “Black Girl” by J. E. Franklin was being performed at the same time as another play on the same bill.
