Jenner was a member of the Graceland Yellowjackets in college football before suffering a knee injury that necessitated surgery. Jenner had a six-year decathlon career, culminating in winning the men’s decathlon event at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, setting a third consecutive world record and gaining fame as “an all-American hero.” Jenner was persuaded to try the decathlon by Olympic decathlete Jack Parker’s coach, L. D. Weldon.  Jenner launched a career in television, movies, writing, motor racing, business, and as a Playgirl cover model, earning the unofficial title of “world’s greatest athlete.”

Jenner has six children with three wives—Chrystie Crownover, Linda Thompson, and Kris Jenner—and appeared on the reality television show Keeping Up with the Kardashians with Kris, their daughters Kendall and Kylie Jenner, and Kris’ other children Kourtney, Kim, Khloé, and Rob Kardashian, from 2007 to 2021.

Jenner came out as a trans woman in April 2015, and her new name was announced in July. She starred in the reality television series I Am Cait, which followed her gender transition from 2015 to 2016. She has been dubbed the world’s most famous transgender woman.  Jenner is a transgender rights activist, while many other trans and LGBTQ+ activists have questioned her views on transgender matters.

She stood for governor of California in the 2021 California gubernatorial recall election, but was defeated by Democrat and incumbent governor Gavin Newsom.Caitlyn Marie Jenner was born William Bruce Jenner on October 28, 1949, in Mount Kisco, New York, and went by that name until June 2015.

Esther Ruth (née McGuire) and arborist William Hugh Jenner are her parents. She traces her ancestors to England, Scotland, Ireland, the Netherlands, and Wales.  Burt Jenner, her younger brother, was killed in an automobile accident in Canton, Connecticut, on November 30, 1976, just days after Jenner’s Olympic victory.  Jenner was diagnosed with dyslexia as a child.

Jenner received a football scholarship and attended Graceland College (now Graceland University) in Lamoni, Iowa, but due to a knee injury, he was forced to cease playing football. L. D. Weldon, a track coach at Graceland, saw Jenner’s potential and urged him to move to the decathlon.Jenner made his decathlon debut in 1970, finishing fifth in the Drake Relays decathlon in Des Moines, Iowa.Jenner earned a physical education degree from Graceland College in 1973.

Jenner was eleventh in the men’s decathlon after the first day at the 1972 U.S. Olympic Trials at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon, then climbed to fifth behind Steve Gough and Andrew Pettes with one event remaining on July 4th.

Jenner qualified for the Olympic team by finishing first, 22 seconds clear of the rest of the field, despite a 19-second deficit behind Gough in the 1500 metres. The Eugene Register-Guard wondered aloud, “Who is Jenner?” Jenner finished ninth in the decathlon at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, West Germany, following the trials. Jenner was encouraged to begin a rigorous training routine after watching Soviet Mykola Avilov win the race. “For the first time in my life, I knew exactly what I wanted out of life, and this guy has it. That night, at midnight, I began training for the Games by running around the streets of Munich, Germany. I trained 6–8 hours a day, every day, 365 days a year from that day until the 1976 Olympics.”

Jenner married Chrystie Crownover and moved to San Jose, California after graduating from Graceland. As a United Airlines flight attendant, Crownover provided the majority of the family’s income. Jenner earned US$9,000 a year by training during the day and selling insurance at night. This type of training was unheard of before professional American athletes were allowed to compete in Olympic sports. Soviet athletes, on the other hand, were state-sponsored, giving them an advantage over amateur American athletes.  Jenner trained at San Jose City College (SJCC) and San Jose State University (SJSU) during this time. San Jose athletics were concentrated on SJCC coach Bert Bonanno, and the city was known as the “Track Capital of the World” at the time.  Millard Hampton, Andre Phillips, John Powell, Mac Wilkins, and Al Feuerbach were among the hopeful Olympic competitors that trained in San Jose. Jenner’s best events were the hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin, and 1500 metres on day two of the decathlon.

Jenner set the tournament record with 8,045 points while on tour in 1975, winning the French national championship and a gold medal at the 1975 Pan American Games.

Caitlyn Jenner Biography/Wiki

BIOGRAPHY:

This was followed by world records of 8,524 points at the United States of America/USSR/Poland triangular meet in Eugene, Oregon, on August 9–10, 1975, which broke Avilov’s record, and 8,538.

Because of a timing system failure, the second Eugene record was a hybrid score that was assisted by the wind. Jenner was still pleased with herself, saying, “A nice little exercise, huh?”

We were able to obtain what we desired. Only a month before the Games, we terrified the living daylights out of everyone on the planet. Jenner only lost one of the 13 decathlons he competed in between 1973 and 1976, in the 1975 AAU National Championships, when a miss in the pole vault ruined his score.

Despite finishing second to Guido Kratschmer of West Germany in the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal, Jenner set personal bests in all five events on the opening day of the men’s decathlon — a “home run.” Jenner felt sure of herself: “The second day is jam-packed with all of my favourite activities. If everything goes according to plan, we should come out ahead in the end.” Jenner took a conservative approach to the hurdles and discus after watching colleague Fred Dixon get injured in the 110 metre hurdles on the second day, and then achieved personal bests in the pole vault and javelin, when Jenner took the lead.

At that moment, victory seemed almost certain, and the only question was how much Jenner would enhance his record. Jenner appeared delighted to end the long competition in the final event, the 1500 metres, which was shown live on national television. Jenner sprinted the final circuit, closing a 50-meter gap and coming close to catching the event favourite, Soviet Leonid Litvinenko, who was already out of contention for the gold medal and whose personal best was eight seconds faster than Jenner’s before the race. Jenner won the gold medal with a world-record score of 8,618 points, setting a new personal best time.

Jenner received an American flag from a spectator after the event and carried it during the victory lap, beginning a ritual that is now typical among winning athletes.  She revealed that she had abandoned the vaulting poles at the stadium and had no intention of ever competing again: “In 1972, I took the decision to stay for four years and devote my entire attention to what I was doing, after which I would go on. I knew going into the competition that it would be the last time I did something like this.”

She clarified, “When you train hard every day, it hurts. Plus, after the decathlon, I’ll have the rest of my life to recover. What does it matter how much it hurts?” Jenner was named the top amateur athlete in the United States and awarded the James E. Sullivan Award. Jenner was selected Male Athlete of the Year by the Associated Press in 1976.  Daley Thompson broke Jenner’s 1976 world and Olympic records by four points at the 1980 Moscow Olympics. Jenner’s Olympic decathlon score was reevaluated in 1985, using the IAAF’s new decathlon scoring table, and presented as 8,634 for comparison purposes. Jenner was rated twenty-sixth all-time in the globe and ninth in the United States as of 2018.  Jenner was inducted into the National Track and Field Hall of Fame of the United States in 1980, the Olympic Hall of Fame in 1986, the Bay Area Sports Hall  San Jose City College has conducted an annual Bruce Jenner Invitational competition for nearly two decades.

Olympic athletes were considered amateurs in the 1970s, and they were not permitted to seek or accept paid for their roles as sports superstars. Three major Olympic titles that had a long history of American success — basketball, the 100-meter sprint, and the decathlon – were won by Soviet athletes during the Cold War in 1972. All Soviet athletes were professionals, but Americans were only allowed to compete as amateurs. By bringing the decathlon crown back to the United States, Jenner became an American hero. “I happened to be the right guy, at the right place, at the right moment” after the Games, Jenner remarked. Jenner and his wife, Chrystie, were “that high up on the pinnacle of American heroics, it would take a crane to lift them down,” according to Tony Kornheiser of The New York Times.

Jenner wanted to cash in on any celebrity status that came with a gold medal, similar to Johnny Weissmuller and Sonja Henie, who became significant movie stars after their gold medals. This would necessitate skipping any future Olympic events. Jenner’s agent, George Wallach, believed there was a four-year window — till the next Olympics – to take advantage of. Jenner was reportedly considered for the role of Superman, which was eventually given to Christopher Reeve, according to Wallach. Wallach remarked, “I honestly don’t know how many offers we have.” “Back at the hotel, there are still unopened telegrams, and you can’t believe the offers that came in during the first two days.”

Jenner was on the cover of Sports Illustrated on August 9, 1976, Gentleman’s Quarterly on February 29, 1979,and Playgirl magazine on August 9, 1976.Jenner became the face of Tropicana, Minolta, and Buster Brown footwear.

Despite not having played basketball since high school, the Kansas City Kings selected Jenner with the 139th overall choice in the seventh round of the 1977 NBA draught.Joe Axelson, the team’s president/general manager, staged the publicity hoax to spoof the Kansas City Chiefs’ annual claims that they would select “the best athlete available” in the National Football League Draft. Jenner was given a shirt with the number 8618, the Olympic gold-medal winning score, but he would never play for the Kings as an active player.
