John Towner Williams is an American composer, conductor, pianist, and trombonist who was born on February 8, 1932. He has produced some of the most popular, iconic, and critically acclaimed film scores in cinematic history over the course of a nearly seven-decade career. Williams has received 25 Grammy Awards, seven BAFTAs, five Academy Awards, and four Golden Globe Awards. He is the second most nominated person for an Academy Award, behind Walt Disney, with 52 nominations. His works are regarded as the pinnacle of film music. Williams’ score for 1977’s Star Wars was named the greatest film score of all time by the American Film Institute in 2005. The Star Wars soundtrack was also added to the National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress because it is “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.”

the Extra-Terrestrial, the first two Home Alone films, the Indiana Jones films, the first two Jurassic Park films, Schindler’s List, and the first three Harry Potter films are among Williams’ many critically acclaimed and popular films.

Williams has also written a number of classical concertos and other works for orchestra and solo instruments. From 1980 to 1993, he was the Boston Pops’ lead conductor, and he is the orchestra’s laureate conductor. Since 1974, he has collaborated with filmmaker Steven Spielberg, creating music for all but five of his feature films, and with George Lucas, on both of his major franchises.

Theme music for the 1984 Summer Olympics, NBC Sunday Night Football, “The Mission” theme used by NBC News and Seven News in Australia, the television series Lost in Space and Land of the Giants, and incidental music for the first season of Gilligan’s Island are among Williams’ other compositions. In 2000, Williams was inducted into the Hollywood Bowl Hall of Fame, and in 2004, he was awarded a Kennedy Center Honor. In 2016, he received the first AFI Life Achievement Award given outside of the acting and directing disciplines. He’s written the music for nine of the top 25 highest-grossing films in the United States (adjusted for inflation). Williams’ work has influenced other composers of film, popular, and contemporary classical music; Norwegian composer Marcus Paus claims that Williams is “one of the great composers of any century” because of his “satisfying way of embodying dissonance and avant-garde techniques within a larger tonal framework.”

Esther and Johnny Williams, a jazz drummer and percussionist who played with the Raymond Scott Quintet, gave birth to John Towner Williams on February 8, 1932, in Flushing, Queens, New York City. Williams stated of his ancestors, ” “My father was from Maine, and we had a close relationship. My mother was a native of Boston. My mother’s father was a cabinetmaker, and my father’s parents owned a department store in Bangor, Maine. […] People with their ancestors are not prone to laziness.” The Williams family moved to Los Angeles in 1948, and John graduated from North Hollywood High School in 1950. Later, he studied composition privately with Italian composer Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco at the University of California, Los Angeles. Williams also spent a semester at Los Angeles City College, where he was a member of the Studio Jazz Band. Williams enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1951, where he performed the piano and brass instruments, as well as conducting and arranging music for the US Air Force Band. In a 2016 interview with the United States Air Force Band, he described attending basic Air Force training at Lackland Air Force Base before serving for three years as a pianist and trumpet musician with additional responsibilities of composing arrangements. As part of his duty, he also took music classes at the University of Arizona. Following his time in the Air Force, Williams returned to New York City in 1955 and enrolled at the Juilliard School, where he studied piano with Rosina Lhévinne. He wanted to be a concert pianist at first, but after hearing current pianists like John Browning and Van Cliburn perform, he changed his mind. Williams worked as a jazz pianist in the city’s various jazz clubs during this time.

John williams Biography/Wiki

BIOGRAPHY:

Despite his ability to compose in a variety of 20th-century idioms, Williams’ most well-known style can be described as a form of neoromanticism, which was inspired by late-19th-century large-scale orchestra.

When Williams was stationed at Pepperrell Air Force Base in 1954, he composed his first video, You Are Welcome, a promotional film for the Newfoundland tourist information office.

Williams’ debut feature film composition was for the B film Daddy-O in 1958, and his first screen credit was for the film Because They’re Young two years later.

During this time, Williams also composed music for a number of television shows, including the pilot episode of Gilligan’s Island, Bachelor Father (1959–60), the Kraft Suspense Theatre, Lost in Space (1965–68), The Time Tunnel (1966–67), and Land of the Giants (1966–67). (the last three created by the prolific TV producer Irwin Allen) He also contributed to a number of episodes of M Squad.

He quickly rose to prominence in Hollywood due to his ability to compose jazz, piano, and orchestral music. Williams’ score for Valley of the Dolls earned him his first Academy Award nomination, and he was nominated again for Goodbye, Mr. Chips in 1969. For his score adaption for the 1971 picture Fiddler on the Roof, he won his first Academy Award. In 1972, he composed the score for Robert Altman’s psychological thriller Images (recorded in collaboration with famous percussionist Stomu Yamashta), earning him another Academy Award nomination for Best Music, Original Dramatic Score in 1973.

Williams rose to fame in the early 1970s as a result of his work on catastrophe films for Irwin Allen, who is now a film producer. He composed the music for The Poseidon Adventure in 1972 and The Towering Inferno in 1974. He also scored Universal’s Earthquake for director Mark Robson in 1974, completing a “trinity” of soundtracks for the decade’s highest-grossing “disaster films,” as well as the 1972 western The Cowboys, directed by Mark Rydell and starring John Wayne.

A year later, they worked up again on Spielberg’s second picture, Jaws. The score’s foreboding, two-note ostinato has become synonymous with sharks and oncoming danger, and is widely regarded as a great suspense picture. Williams won his second Academy Award for the score, his first for an original work.

Shortly after, Spielberg and Williams began working on Close Encounters of the Third Kind, their next big picture. They created its characteristic five-note figure over the course of a two-year partnership, which serves as both background music and a communications signal for the film’s extraterrestrials. In the film, Williams also used a system of musical hand signals based on John Curwen’s hand signs, which were improved by Zoltán Kodály.

During this time, Spielberg introduced Williams to fellow director and friend George Lucas, who was looking for a composer for his ambitious 1977 space epic picture Star Wars. In the style of Richard Strauss, Antonn Dvoák, and Golden Age Hollywood composers Max Steiner and Erich Wolfgang Korngold, Williams eventually composed a huge symphonic score. The “Force Tune” and “Princess Leia’s Theme” are well-known instances of leitmotif, and the Star Wars theme is one of the most well-known in film history. The film and its score were huge hits, and Williams earned another Academy Award for Best Original Score for the film.

Williams returned to score The Empire Strikes Back in 1980, bringing “The Imperial March” as Darth Vader and the Galactic Empire’s theme, as well as “Yoda’s Theme” and “Han Solo trilogy. He was nominated for an Academy Award for both of his scores.
In 1976, Williams composed the score for Alfred Hitchcock’s film Family Plot. Williams did not enjoy the film, but he did not want to pass up the opportunity to work with Hitchcock. Hitchcock only advised him to keep one thing in mind: “Murder may be entertaining.” Hitchcock was ecstatic with the outcome.

The score for the 1978 film Superman was composed by Williams in collaboration with director Richard Donner. The heroic and romantic motifs from the score appeared throughout the four sequel films, particularly the main march, the Superman fanfare, and the love theme known as “Can You Read My Mind.” Williams composed a thrilling primary theme known as “The Raiders March” to accompany Indiana Jones in the 1981 picture Raiders of the Lost Ark, which was written by Lucas and directed by Spielberg. He created different themes to symbolise the Ark of the Covenant, Marion, and the Nazi baddies in the plot. Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, a prequel (1984), Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989), and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (1990) all incorporated additional themes (2008). Williams won his fourth Academy Award for his passionate and sympathetic score to Steven Spielberg’s 1982 fantasy film E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial.

NBC commissioned Williams to produce a television news music package for various network news spots in 1985. The package, dubbed “The Mission” by Williams, is made up of four movements, two of which are still frequently used by NBC today for Today, NBC Nightly News, and Meet the Press.

With the 1987 film Empire of the Sun, Spielberg and Williams resumed their collaboration, which now spans genres from science fiction thrillers (1993’s Jurassic Park) to sombre tragedies (2005’s Munich), Eastern-tinged melodramas (2005’s Memoirs of a Geisha, directed by Rob Marshall), and dramatic war films (1998’s Saving Private Ryan). “I deem it an honourable privilege to regard John Williams as a friend,” Spielberg has remarked.

Williams struggled with 1993’s Schindler’s List, and after seeing the rough cut with Spielberg, he was first hesitant to soundtrack the picture since he was struck with emotion when seeing it.

“I know,” Spielberg responded, “but they’re all dead.” Williams enlisted classical musician Itzhak Perlman to compose the film’s main tune. Williams then won his fifth Academy Award for Best Original Score.

The first of three prequels to the original Star Wars trilogy was released in 1999 by George Lucas. Williams was tasked with composing the scores for all three films, beginning with The Phantom Menace. Williams composed new themes to be utilised as leitmotifs in Attack of the Clones in 2002 and Revenge of the Sith in 2005, in addition to themes from prior films. The most noteworthy of these was “Duel of the Fates,” an angry choral work in the style of Verdi’s Requiem[38] with harsh Sanskrit lyrics that expanded the Star Wars film music style. It included voice melodies rather than the brass instruments that he usually uses in his songs. “Anakin’s Theme,” which begins as an innocent infantile melody before morphing insidiously into a quotation of the menacing “Imperial March,” was also noteworthy. “Across the Stars,” a love theme for Padmé Amidala and Anakin Skywalker, was composed by Williams for Episode II (mirroring the love theme composed for The Empire Strikes Back).
