Moshe Kasher Biography/Wiki

BIOGRAPHY:

He was born on July 6, 1979, and he is a comedian. Soon after Moshe Kasher was born in Queens to Jewish and deaf parents, his mother took him and his older brother to Oakland, making it look like they were going on vacation. Their abusive father had been living with them in Queens. They moved in with his grandmother, who had also left her husband and was also living alone. Kasher went on to grow up in Oakland, and he often talks about things that happened there in his comedy. Kasher’s mother had trouble finding work because she was deaf. This stress shaped Moshe’s personality. As a child, he was known for being hard to deal with.

The police learned his name, and he learned theirs. His mother was so upset by his personality that she started taking him to therapy when he was only four years old. At age 13, he went to the UCSF Center for the Deaf eight times a week for four different kinds of therapy: individual therapy, behavioral counseling, group therapy, and family therapy. Kasher was hooked on cigarettes and pot by the time he was twelve, and he always took acid when he was thirteen.

He failed middle school three times in a row while using drugs to escape an existential crisis that was taking over his life. Kasher says that he was one of the only white kids at the public schools he went to and that the fact that his friends were of different races, social classes, and cultures influenced his work. Many of the people who became his friends also broke rules and used drugs. Kasher spent a lot of time at the Rockridge BART Station, where he often hung out with friends to smoke and drink.

He eventually started stealing from his home to get money for drugs. He stole CDs from his mother’s boyfriend and sold them to Amoeba Records in Berkeley so he could buy drugs. This was one of a long list of things that made her send him to Ross Hospital, a psychiatric lockdown hospital for teens. Soon after, he was let out of jail and sent to the New Bridge Foundation’s rehab center in Berkeley to take part in an outpatient program.

Later, Kasher was sent to the Seneca Center for the Severely Emotionally Disturbed Child and the Walnut Creek Kaiser Rehabilitation Center. Both of these places kicked him out of their programs, though. The last thing he did was go to the Kaiser Adolescent Chemical Dependency Program in Oakland. Kasher stopped taking drugs at age 15, after being in a mental hospital, three different rehab centers, and therapy for more than ten years. “I knew,” he writes. I knew that day.

The pain of being alive is worse than being afraid of change. “The time will come” (Kasher in the Rye 386). Shortly after that, Kasher went to the Springs Academy, “another non-public school for people for whom every other method of education had failed” (476), and got his GED. Now that he was sober, he did well here instead of fighting against the people in charge.

Kasher went on to become a sign language interpreter, go to community college, and think about becoming a religious studies professor, which he put out in 2009, was named one of the top twenty comedy albums of the year by iTunes. After three years, his career took off.

The Coexist Comedy Tour was his first movie. It came out in 2012. The movie is shot like a documentary, with people from the major religions doing stand-up routines to talk about their faiths. Two months later, his book Kasher in the Rye: The True Story of a White Boy from Oakland Who Became a Drug Addict, Criminal, and Mental Patient And Then Turned 16 came out.

With these releases, Kasher got a reputation for not being afraid to talk about sensitive subjects like sex and religion, which has led to a lot of criticism. In response, Kasher is often the first person to admit his mistakes in a funny way. After his book and Netflix special did well, Kasher started to show up more often on shows like Chelsea Lately. In 2014, he started a podcast called Hound Tall Discussion Series.

In the same year, he made a cameo on Chelsea Peretti’s show Brooklyn Nine-Nine and in her Netflix special, One of the Greats. In 2015, he started writing for the show Another Period, in which his wife, Natasha Leggero, is the main character. He appeared on Transparent, Portlandia, and Zoolander 2 as a guest star. In 2017, he was given one season of the show Problematic on Comedy Central.

Kasher’s talk show was based on the idea that experts would talk about controversial topics like the alt-right, cultural appropriation, and Islamophobia. During an episode, he didn’t talk over or interrupt his guests. Instead, he invited them on the show and asked them a few questions, giving people from underrepresented groups a chance to be heard. The Honeymoon Stand Up Special, a three-part comedy special made by Kasher and Natasha Leggero, came out on Netflix in the middle of April 2018.
